Summer Essentials: Top 10 Tips for Hair and Skin Health

Summer is here at last! We will all hopefully be spending more time outdoors going out and about.

However, it is crucial that during the summer months, you protect your hair and importantly, your skin.

Looking after your hair and skin in the summer requires specific care to counteract the effects of heat, sun, and humidity. Here are my top 10 tips:

For Hair:

1. Protect from Sun Exposure:

• Wear a hat or scarf to shield your hair from direct sunlight.

• Use hair products with SPF to protect your scalp and hair from UV damage.

• Hydrate and Condition:

• Use a deep conditioner once a week to keep your hair moisturized.

• Leave-in conditioners and serums can provide extra hydration and protection against humidity.

2. Minimize Heat Styling:

• Reduce the use of heat-styling tools like straighteners and curling irons to prevent additional heat damage.

• Opt for natural styles that do not require heat.

3. Rinse after Swimming:

• Rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming in a pool or the ocean to remove chlorine and salt.

• Use a clarifying shampoo periodically to cleanse your hair thoroughly.

5. Trim Regularly:

• Get regular trims to avoid split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and fresh.

For Skin:

1. Apply Sunscreen:

• Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

• Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

2. Stay Hydrated:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

• Use a hydrating facial mist or a lightweight moisturizer to maintain skin moisture.

3. Exfoliate Gently:

• Exfoliate your skin 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores.

• Use gentle exfoliants to avoid irritation.

4. Choose Lighter Skincare Products:

• Switch to lighter, oil-free moisturizers and serums to prevent clogging pores in the summer heat.

• Gel-based products can be a good alternative to heavier creams.

5. Wear Protective Clothing:

• Wear loose, light-colored clothing that covers your skin to protect against sunburn.

• Consider using UV-protective clothing for added sun protection.
